![]() ![]() And, unlike other books that try to do many things at once, all the many themes are executed well. Oh, and it's also one of the most diverse books I've ever read. It's about coming to terms with ones sexuality, it's about friendship, it's about memory and forgetting, it's a love story, and it's about choosing to be happy, despite the sad. Because this book is an overlapping of several stories and themes, each one as powerful as the last. ![]() ![]() Personally, I do not think the promised big twist is particularly hard to guess if you've read the description and seen the movie this is being compared to, but I don't think much hangs on it anyway. The quirky dialogue and nerdy references to comic books, Star Wars and action heroes are much needed to lighten up an otherwise very distressing novel. I opened with that quote for a reason - while definitely entertaining, More Happy Than Not is a dark, sad book that deals with homophobia, depression and suicide. ![]()

Maybe it was in the fall of 2014, after GamerGate took off, and woman after woman started posting in public the death threats and the rape threats they were getting every day for, as far as anyone could tell, having opinions on the internet. Maybe I first had it in 2016, right after Trump was elected president and I saw a man posting victoriously on Reddit’s most misogynistic forums about how this proved that incels had won, that women truly were inferior to men and everyone knew it, that he could keep a woman in a fucking cage if he wanted to and no one could do anything about it. “My god,” I thought, “I feel as though I’m in a constant state of having just read The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P.” That was when every week another much-admired man was accused of doing something monstrous to women, and my entire life started to be taken up by the process of learning the details of this monstrosity, reporting them back to the public, analyzing them, and then reciting them over and over again to my friends at cocktail parties, while everyone whispered, “Can you believe it? Can you believe he did that?” It was in the fall of 2017 that I first had the thought. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Twelve-year-old Stanly knows the bone is a little weird, but thats okay, because now hell have the perfect photo to submit to the Young Discoverers Competition. ![]() However, Miren is desperate not to lose her friend, forcing Stanly to question everything he’s ever believed about life, love, and the mysterious forces that connect us. Brief Summary of Book: Skeleton Tree by Kim Ventrella ![]() ![]() In his Author’s Note at the end, Bao Phi writes that “One thing that may be universal to all parents is, we want our kids to have an easier, better life than we did.” Having difficult conversations with your children, and not dismissing their problems, is one of the hardest parts of being a parent. This book is an important vehicle for navigating these tough feelings. ![]() Sadly, these are the realities that many children (and adults) experience. At school she is teased for having two moms, she is told to go back to where she came from and is called names for being a girl. This book is an essential representation of many intersecting stereotypes that Thuy experiences. Together they find a way to overcome these feelings because “we’re stronger together.” Once she reaches home, she has a creative way of opening up to her mothers about how she is feeling. ![]() Lost in her imagination on her walk home, Thuy creates footprints in the snow that mimic each creature. After being teased in class, Thuy imagines herself as a variety of creatures that she believes would be impervious to the bullying of others. “My Footprints” by Bao Phi is his second story following “A Different Pond.” In this unique story, the author explores how one little girl handles her feelings about being bullied at school. ![]() ![]() ![]() In this graphic novel for newly independent readers, Baloney and friends step into the spotlight and embody all the charm of childhood in three short tales and three mini-comics that invite readers to join the fun! And if a book feels to me like a film in the making, I am doubly averse to it, feeling strongly that literature needs to reveal the world in ways that film cannot. ![]() ![]() I've abandoned many novels because their premises struck me as preposterous. I abhor feeling trapped in someone else's crazy imagination: Alice in Wonderland has always horrified me I find the film Brazil unbearable. I am hostile to whimsy, and beyond impatient with the fantastical. As a reader, I am resistant to historical fiction. In the case of Erin Morgenstern's first novel, The Night Circus, I might well have been the wrong reviewer. One can admire a work of fiction without particularly enjoying it one can dislike a novel even while appreciating its value. T o a degree, literary taste is a subjective matter. ![]() |
